Is the Million Lives Club a grant fund?
The MLC is not a grant fund and is not offering any financial support at this time, but selected innovators will be profiled on the MLC platform and will gain visibility among MLC partners and other organizations.
Do I have to have a Global Innovation Exchange (GIE) profile to apply to the MLC?
It is not essential to have a Global Innovation Exchange (GIE) profile to apply to the MLC, however, if you do have a profile, the MLC application process will be simpler and quicker, as key details from your GIE profile will be automatically populated in your MLC application form.
If you don’t have a GIE profile, you can choose to create one as part of the MLC application process - details from your MLC application can be automatically populated into a new GIE profile for you. To make this happen, simply select the relevant option at the end of the MLC application form.
For the purposes of MLC, we consider a single specific product/service/approach as an innovation, and would require a separate application to be submitted for each one.
In some cases, several innovations work in conjunction as an integrated product/service ‘package’ (for example, providing a new farming input using an innovative finance model and supported by extension services through a mobile app). In this case, because the innovations are collectively impacting the same clients under a single mandate (e.g. to improve outputs for smallholder farmers) it would be possible to submit a single application.
By contrast, if an organization had developed a number of distinct/separate products (e.g. a farming input, a health product and an educational app for the classroom) these would require separate applications and the total number of clients would need to be reported separately - they could not be aggregated.
Is there a deadline for applying to the Million Lives Club?
The Million Lives Club is operating an open application window - you can apply at any time. That said, application reviews will take place periodically, and the first review round will consider all applications submitted by Friday 9th August (23:59 EST)*. The timing of the next review round is still to be confirmed, but is likely to be around December 2019. Candidates are encouraged to submit their applications as soon as they are complete.
* Note that this was extended from an original cut-off of 1st August 2019.
Can we submit an application by email?
Unfortunately we cannot accept applications by email. All applications to the Million Lives Club must be made through the online application portal.
Is there a cost attached to applying to the Million Lives Club?
There is no cost (i.e. application fee or similar) for applying to the Million Lives Club.
I’m experiencing issues with logging on to the application portal, help!

Does the Million Lives Club consider applications from any particular sectors?
Innovations from any sector will be considered for inclusion in the Million Lives Club! The key requirement is that the innovation must serve a client base of those living on less than USD $5 per day.
We don’t know the exact number of individual clients that we have impacted, only the total number of products sold (or number of times a service is accessed). Are we still eligible to apply?
When screening MLC applications, we look at the number of individual clients that have been impacted by an innovation over time. That said, we do understand that gathering data to this level for any organization can be challenging.
For the purposes of your MLC application, if you have sales figures (or equivalent data), you may provide an estimate of the number of individual clients that you have reached, showing the data and assumptions behind your workings (including secondary sources if relevant). The MLC team will then be able to review and assess your application on the basis of your estimated number of individual clients served.
We are interested in applying to the MLC Vanguard cohort as we have reached 1m clients. However, not all of our clients are living on less than $5/ day - are we still eligible?
For inclusion in the MLC Vanguard cohort, an innovation would need to have reached at least 1 million individual clients who are living on less than USD $5 per day.
How do we know if we are eligible for the MLC Pioneer cohort?
For inclusion in the MLC Pioneer cohort, an innovation would need to have reached at least 40% of its target population. The clients counted in the 40% should be only those living on less than USD $5 per day.
For the purposes of your MLC application, you should explain in detail how you have calculated the size of your target population (for example, this might be a global population faced with a particular health issue, or a population living in a specific geography such as a Pacific Island nation) providing references to your own data or secondary sources as appropriate. You should also provide evidence of how you have counted the total number of clients living on less than USD $5 per day, and therefore how you have calculated that you have reached at least 40% of your target population.
I have a great innovation but it doesn’t fit into any of the MLC cohorts, what should I do?
Currently, the Million Lives Club is searching for innovations that fit into the MLC Vanguard, MLC Voyager and MLC Pioneer cohorts. However, over time we may add new cohorts to the Million Lives Club, so do check back on our website and follow us on Twitter for the latest updates!
In the meantime, make sure you also set up an innovation profile on the Global Innovation Exchange, as many funders, including MLC partners, use this platform to identify innovations.
