The Rumie Initiative is a non-profit tech startup with a mission to bring a surgeof free learning content online to communities least likely to access it but with the most to gain. To achieve this, Rumie engages volunteers to collaboratively organize free educational resources on the LearnCloud, a website and online repository of free learning content and then delivers the content to children around the world on low-cost tablets.
How does your innovation work?
Rumie engages volunteers to organize the best free digital learning resources on the LearnCloud. Rumie then delivers relevant libraries of this content to children around the world on low-cost tablets. NGO partners use the LearnCloud to choose the content for their tablets, which they distribute in their educational programs. Tablets cost less than the average textbook and hold content that would traditionally cost over $5,000 to deliver. Rumie’s model is based on three market trends: the explosion of free digital educational resources available online, the increased availability of low-cost Android tablets as a delivery mechanism, and the newfound ability to use crowdsourcing to curate, translate and moderate all of this content.

Stage 5: Scaling

Since launching, Rumie now has 5,000 tablets in use; impacting 25,000+ children worldwide in 21 countries including Syrian refugee camps in Jordan and Turkey as well as Indigenous communities in northern Ontario, Canada to name a few. Currently, Rumie works with 25 NGOs who have strong local ties that help ensure sustainability of their tablets and community buy-in. Rumie’s partners report significant impact on numeracy and literacy outcomes for children using the tablets as well as increased teacher efficiency and ability. Rumie’s most successful campaign to date is #LearnSyria, which began as a short-term campaign to raise funds and gather learning content for displaced Syrian children. Thanks to the overwhelming support of thousands of contributors, #LearnSyria has grown into an ongoing project spanning multiple countries and partner organizations, with efforts expanding each day.
