Stage 5: Scaling

VillageReach solutions have scaled to reach national level implementation and we have replicated our solutions across geographies and with partners. We continue to seek opportunities to scale and replicate our successful innovations.

Though we have seen remarkable improvements in access to health services in sub-Saharan Africa, persistent gaps exist for those in the lowest income levels, marginalized populations and other hard-to-reach populations. These populations are the least likely to have access to routine care and information and to essential medicines and vaccines. Changing disease burden, urbanization, migration and a growing youth population are placing more pressure on already fragile health systems.

VillageReach works with governments to transform health care delivery. We improve health systems to be more flexible, responsive to people’s needs and resilient to shocks and changes. VillageReach improves health supply chains to difficult-to-reach communities so people get the medicine and vaccines they need; and increases access to health information so people have the knowledge they need to make informed health decisions.

Target Beneficiaries

Our direct beneficiaries typically fall into two categories: 1) Rural women and children in sub-Saharan Africa where over 70% of people live on less than $2 per day; 2) Health workers working at rural health facilities throughout Angola, Benin, Cote d’Ivoire, DRC, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Zambia. Indirectly, VillageReach improves over 35 million lives a year throughout sub-Saharan Africa.

Mission and Vision

VillageReach's mission is to transform health care delivery to reach everyone. Our vision is a world where each person has the health care to thrive.

Innovation Description

VillageReach uses technology to design innovative solutions that improve access to health products and services. VillageReach is dedicated to replicating our successful strategies, while also deepening our approach. Our innovations include: ~ Supply Chains: We improve supply chains, optimize transport routes and improve cold chain storage so medicines and vaccines make it to health centers and Community Health Workers. We are using new technologies such as drones to deliver medicine, vaccines and even blood. In August, we used drones to deliver three months’ worth of vaccines supplies to health clinics in DRC, reducing a 6 hour round trip delivery to 20 minutes. VillageReach is also working with partners to improve supply chains for Community Health Workers, such as with Last Mile Health in Liberia. ~ Health Center by Phone: VillageReach and the Malawi government designed a free, 24 hour hotline that provides health information to callers nationwide. We are planning to add AI to this solution and replicate it in new countries. ~ Data Improvements: The open source logistics data we designed is used by over 11,000 thousands facilities across 10 countries, to manage supply chains and track medicine and vaccines. Digital solutions like these help leaders make smart data-based decisions about national health policies.

Competitive Advantage

VillageReach is a recognized global leader in supply chain transformation and we bring to bear our extensive knowledge of supply chain challenges at the last mile in order to create systems level change. We are also known for strong, collaborative partnership with governments, partners and with private logistics companies. By collaborating with governments from the beginning and by engaging the private sector, we design next generation supply chains that can be transferred to governments in order to scale and sustain these solutions for the long term. We have successfully transferred most aspects of our Mozambique immunization supply chain to the MOH, we are doing the same for a health supply chain in northern Mozambique, and other VillageReach programs have also transitioned to government, such as our CCPF Health Center by Phone in Malawi that we have transitioned to the Malawi Ministry of Health.

Planned Goals and Milestones

VillageReach's goals are to scale and replicate successful solutions and to transition them to partners. In the next 3-5 years, we aim to: 1.) Replicate Health Center by Phone in 3+ countries while transitioning the Malawi project to the Ministry of Health. We also want to add AI capabilities; 2.) Expand Supply Chain for Community Workers to 2+ countries; 3.) Expand Drones for Health throughout DRC and replicate this in Malawi and Mozambique.
